Image submissions to the OCC website is not difficult and can accomplished in one of the following ways:
* Email Submission
* FTP Submission
* Storage Media Submissions
Things to consider:
* Images should edited and cropped for presentation.
* Resizing may not be necessary depending upon the method of submission. An adequate image has 800 pixels on the longest side of the image.
Adobe Flash formerly "Macromedia Flash" is a rich internet technology, which allows for superior presentation of images, video, animation, graphics, etc.. Flash is ideal for presenting images on the internet.

!!Image Submission via Email
* In order to send images as attachments you will need a direct email address. Contact the OCC webmaster for a direct email address by using the OCC website contact form http://www.orangevillecameraclub.ca/contact_webmaster.htm.
* Address your email with the supplied address, then include any details such as Image Name or Caption and attach your images.
* Procedure for Emailing Images
* Email Tips

* Note: Attaching images to a email greatly increases the size your email file size. Members should be aware that issues can arise with transmission because of this larger file size. Some Internet Providers impose limits on email sizes. Dial-up users for instance may experience very long transmission times and/or failures. The web_master email account has no limitations such as this.

Related Topics: Email Tips, Storage Media Submissions, FTP Submission

* When send large numbers of images, try sending a lesser number in multiple emails, to reduce the chances of transmission problems.
* Allow a period of time to pass between emails, to reduce the chances of being categorized as SPAM, which may divert your email to SPAM protection/blocking features of Internet Providers.
* Consider reducing the file size of attachments (images) prior to attachment, see Image Resizing.

!!Overview
Image submissions with "FTP" (File Transfer Protocol) is now possible. Members can upload via the Internet to our server from any home PC. In order to utilize FTP the user will need to be familiar with FTP programs such as FileZilla or FireFTP. With a FTP program users can connect to our server (users would be required to login), navigate to, or create a folder with their own name and upload the images to that folder (see FTPProcedure for a full procedure). Website personnel would then reverse the process to download the images to prepared and posted.

!!Member Instructions:

Please contact the webmaster and request the latest FTP connection information (this will change periodically).
With a FTP program (FileZilla, FireFTP, etc.) make a connection using the following:
* host: //<provided by webmaster>//
* port: 21
* servertype: ftp
* logintype: normal
* user: //<provided by webmaster>//
* password: //<provided by webmaster>//
When connected the FTP program will show a number of folders. Please do not disturb these folders as they belong to fellow members.

Step 1
Connect and create a folder for your submissions. Use a folder name with your own first initial and about the first four characters of your last name as in this example; Mike Kristjanson => mkrist (my folder name). This is not critical but the folder name should be unique to each member. Please communicate to the webmaster the name of the folder and that there are new images to be processed.

Step 2
Upload your submissions (images, docs, text files, etc.) to your folder named above. Please feel free to include information (captions, titles, explainations) about the submissions with the upload. Note, all image/file sizes are appropriate (no limits). The only impact members may encounter is upload speeds depending upon individual internet connections.

!!Flash Gallery Type
This year the Orangeville Camera Club website is offering a new Gallery Media type based on Adobe Flash. Its major component is "Simpleviewer" and it offers smooth, quick transitions between images.

Although "Simpleviewer" allows for very large galleries, our recommended gallery size is around 20 to 30 images. Additional we recommend that these images should be faithfully replaced every couple of months. This treats the returning visitor to fresh content.

Members who wish to have more than 20 to 30 images should consider having additional galleries or Feature Galleries.

This gallery type allows for some customization of background colors, borders, etc.. Members are encouraged to inquire about special needs.

!Description of Image Galleries on the OCC Website
The Orangeville Camera Club has many ways to showcase a members images:
!!!Main Gallery
Each of the main pages has the ability to show case images. There is active content within the header sections (Logo Area). Each header displays four thumbnails or four thumbnails per page. The visitor has the option to click on a thumbnail and view a larger full screen image which pops-up in a shadow framed layer. Combined the five main pages host 20 images. These images are changed periodically. This is our Main Gallery or Sitewide Header Gallery. See Sitewide Header Gallery.
!!!Member Galleries
Each member is entitled to a personal gallery of their own images. Members Galleries are a personal space where a member can share his/her personal creative work. Members galleries are indexed on the main "http://www.orangevillecameraclub.ca/gallery.htm". A member gallery at his time can be one of two types, Flash Galleries or HTML Galleries. The Flash Galleries type is the newest and offers several advantages such as, faster creation time, rich presentation and capable of hosting many images (//at this time the Flash galleries are receiving the bulk of technical development//) . See Member Galleries.
!!!Feature Galleries
As a further creative outlet the website offers Feature Galleries. This gallery type is also open to members for travelogs, field trip, themed or other collection of images. At present we have image collections from several contributing members on a variety of subjects.
!!!Competition Results
Our intention is to have winning and noteworthy images from competitions to compliment "Competition Reports" and showcase activities of the club. The procedure for the handling of competition images is not well established at this time, but members are welcome to submit images to the website for reporting. Members are encouraged to discuss competition reporting with the club Competition Executive Chair".

Image preparation for submission should consider the following:
!!!Step 1> Artistic Expression
This Wiki assumes that the image adjustments such as exposure, flaw removal, aesthetics and artistic expression (to mention a few) are completed by the member. Images submitted will be posted as is with regard to appearance and composition.
!!!Step 2> Sizing for Submission
* Verify that your image for submission meets the minimum Required Image Assets, Image Asset Definition
* My image requires re-sizing. see Image Resizing
What Size?

Coming soon, procedures for resizing images...
Photoshop, dimensions and resolution
Presently the website has a target image Image Asset Definition of 500 pixels maximum for the longest dimension of the image. (if an image is oriented "portrait" then this would be 500px in height and vice versa for landscape) Once sized, the image is "Saved for Web" (once only), at "medium quality" using Photoshop. This establishes a standard to help control the artifacts which will appear in images displayed on the web.

The file type, the amount of image processing and the original quality of an image will affect the final image quality posted to the web. Members submitting images should be aware of these facts and allow for one additional "Save for Web" operation to be performed during the posting process.

The website requires that images submitted contain suitable "Image Assets" to allow for correct posting of images for the present and near future. We suggest that images submitted be a minimum of 800 pixels on the longest dimension, save as a tif or non-lossy file format. If Jpeg is required it should have a minimum of previous file saves in its history.

!!What is Micro Content?
It is a small piece of instance linked content. It is dependent upon software to allow the application of links to individual words or terms. Words or terms, within texts can be linked to related content. Such words or terms are generally called WikiWords. WikiWords link content with other content. The prevailing use of WikiWords within Wikis is to maximize the use of small content blocks (Micro Content) to form a larger content.
Wikis allow the reader the option of investigating added Micro Content.

!About Saving JPG File Format

JPG is a lossey file format. In other words each time a file is save as a JPG, pixel information within the file is lost to create the very compact JPG file. Basically information is sacrificed to allow for a smaller file size.

During photo editing it is recommended that file formats like JPG be used only for the final output and not for intermediate saves during edit operations.

Additionally image quality factors into our description of "Image Assets". Are there artifacts in the image:
* from the original image
* from "Save for Web" operations
* from a Jpeg (or other lossey file format) which has been saved repeatedly.
Together all of the above play a part in determining what quality of image will finally reach the Web.

The future for the website is already here. It is time to reconsider the website formatting (presently optimized for 800x600px displays) The existing maximum image posting size of 560px images will no doubt change as new computer models and very large displays seem to be the norm (especially with photographers). This will require a complete site wide redesign. There are no firm plans for this task at present.
"Tiddler" is the name given to a unit of MicroContent in TiddlyWiki.

Tiddlers are pervasive in TiddlyWiki. The ~MainMenu is defined by a Tiddler, plugins are delivered in Tiddler, there are special ~StyleSheet Tiddler, and so on.

Other systems have analogous concepts with more prosaic names: like "items", "entries", "entities". Even though "Tiddler" is undoubtedly a ~SillyName it at least has the virtue of being confusingly distinctive rather than confusingly generic.

!Q: What resolution of image do I submit for galleries?

A:
* Short answer; Resolution does not matter, submit 800 pixels maximum per side.

* Detailed answer; Resolution is "hotbed" of confusion. The simplest way to prepare an image for web use is by specifying the pixel dimensions. The physical dimensions (width x height) or resolution (pi or dpi) of a given image are not important for web content, as all will be displayed at 72pi. It is true that between hardware platforms (Apple with 72pi vs PC with 96pi), there are small differences in the resolution used of web content but this impacts the display of content very little. On this basis the OCC Website assumes 72pi.

Consider if a submision is 600px x 800px at 72pi (pixels per inch)

Consider which is easier to create:
* an image which is 333 px x 500 px, @72pi
* an image which is 2.313 inch x 3.472 inches @144pi

A: Contrary to all opinions of the importance of "high resolution" for successful image presentation or printing, resolution requirements for the web is 72 pixels per inch. Between hardware platforms (Apple(72pi) vs PC(96pi)), there are small differences which impact the display very little. On this basis the OCC Website assumes 72pi. Having established this
Question: What size of image do I submit for galleries?
> Answer (simplified): At this time, images submitted for galleries should be no less than 1024 pixels on the longest side. All images will be further resized by the webmaster for use on the website.
> Answer (detailed): See Required Image Assets.

All members in "Good Standing" are entitled to have both images and galleries on the club website. Specifically images for the Sitewide Header Gallery, Member Galleries and Feature Galleries. Additionally given the recent increase in web storage for the website, we foresee no limits to the number of images a member may contribute to the website or galleries, save the time available to website personnel.

Members should know that the website personnel also reserve the right to remove very old content and to act in the best interest of the club or club website.
Assets is a term used to describe all properties of an image. It relates to image properties like a recipe relates to ingredients.

Image properties are terms widely used and misused. The ways in which they relate to each other often misunderstood. The goal of this Wiki is help members navigate the tangled relationships of these terms to achieve good results. Perhaps along the way increase understanding of these properties for all of us.

>For example commonly images are described in terms of resolution. "Resolution" as it is commonly used is what I call a non-property because it is really a value acquired by considering two real properties, pixels dimensions and displayed or print dimensions. Using Resolution in guidelines for resizing is invariably confusing and gives poor results. It makes more sense to use the actual pixel dimensions of the image because the pixel dimensions give accurate information about the quality of an image.

A Wiki is a piece of server software which allows users to freely create and edit web content using only a web browser. The software controls the page formatting and organization with the exception of some text formating which can be specified by the user. Information is commonly organized in MicroContent and is well suited to informational writing. .

A Wiki Word is any word which is identified as a link to other content.

Usually Wiki software identifies words to be used as Wiki Words automatically, when it encounters at least two capital letters within the word. Typically two capitalized words are pushed together by eliminating the space between them. This is also called CamelCase. CamelCase preserves much the legibility of conventional writing.

It is possible to force (Wikize) a word to be a Wiki Word without using CamelCase. This is accomplished in a variety of ways depending upon which Wiki software you are using. TiddlyWiki wikizes a word when it is enclosed by double square brackets (eg [ [word] ] ).
